Standing on the Clouds to Overlook Hawaii — A Ninety-Minute Journey Through "Heaven on Earth"

When traveling to Hawaii, the most stunning sight isn’t the beach beauties, but the heavenly panorama above the clouds. Located on Maui Island in Hawaii, Haleakala National Park spans the southern and eastern coastlines of the island. It is the highest peak on Maui, and from the summit, you can witness the breathtaking view of the land blanketed in white clouds from the mountainside upwards. Walking atop the sea of clouds with your feet seemingly floating on the mist is like being in paradise.

Slightly shorter than Japan’s Mount Fuji, which stands at 3,776 meters, the feeling here is remarkably similar. Haleakala Volcano rises 3,055 meters above sea level, and it takes about a ninety-minute drive to reach the summit from the base. No matter where you are on Maui, you can see its towering presence. This is also the best spot on Maui to watch the sunrise. In summer, locals often bring their families here to camp and immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature while overlooking the entire island.

"We’re now driving from the neck inland." If you look at a map of Maui, you’ll notice that the whole island resembles the bust of a woman. This is because Maui is made up of two volcanic islands. The head-like part is Puu Kukui, the body is Haleakala, and the lava flow connects these two once-erupting volcanoes, forming an elongated neck. Hawaiian local guide Stephen says that if you want to know where you are on Maui, just identify which part of the body it corresponds to.

Driving up Haleakala Volcano from the base, as the altitude increases, you can see blooming “silversword plants (silverswords),” a unique species to Haleakala. Resembling trees covered in gray spines, when their leaves fall, the silvery foliage drops onto the soil as if turning into ashes — a rare cold-climate plant. As the car winds along the mountain road, you’ll also see many bikers heading back after enjoying the sunrise. And at every turn, you can overlook the spectacular scenery where Maui meets the ocean.

Ascending from the base to Haleakala Volcano, the temperature continuously drops. By the time you reach the summit, what was originally a pleasant 28°C has plummeted to below 10°C — as if you’ve stepped into a freezer. Yet, standing in this "freezer," shivering while admiring the sea of clouds around and beneath your feet gives you the surreal sensation of being on a cloud, in another realm. This mind-bending illusion of "heaven on earth" can only truly be appreciated through personal experience.
