A Small Village’s Grand Event: Live Coverage of the 2013 Hsinchu National Day Fireworks at Haishan Fishing Port

The 2013 National Day fireworks were held in Hsinchu City for the first time this year, and this year’s display was quite special, divided into three sessions: the first on 9/28 at Guanpu Redevelopment Area, the second originally scheduled for 10/5 at Haishan Fishing Port but postponed to 10/9 due to heavy wind and rain, and the final session on 10/10 at Hsinchu Fishing Port.

Haishan Fishing Port wasn’t originally a bustling place—it’s a small fishing harbor located in the southern part of Hsinchu City, accessible only via the tiny Xiangshan Train Station—so holding the event here was quite meaningful for local residents. Since my queen grew up around here, I had to come personally to capture and share this fireworks show with everyone.

This photoshoot was done from Muzheng Temple on the hills of Xiangshan. I initially thought the fireworks would be launched from the angle shown in the photo below, but the actual launch site was on the right side of the frame. So the sketch I drew while waiting was meant to be the lead image for the article—but due to poor reconnaissance, I got the orientation completely wrong, causing a last-minute scramble right from the start of the shoot.
