Situated at the border between Shenkeng and Shiding in New Taipei City, the mountain earned its name “Bijia Mountain” (Pen Rack Mountain) due to its resemblance to a pen rack when viewed from afar. It is one of the three major rock climbing areas in northern Taiwan. Though it stands only 585 meters tall, the dramatic elevation changes along the route require rope-assisted climbing and navigating steep, rugged ridgelines. Every step demands caution, making it physically and mentally demanding. Progressing along the trail markers often involves “using both hands and feet” to reach the top, which is why it attracts many extreme hikers.

There are three main trailheads, but the most popular is the “Erge Road End” hiking trail, the closest to Bijia Mountain. After just about five minutes along the path, you’ll encounter a massive cliff face, with numerous rocky outcrops to admire along the way. Hiking through the forest and breathing in the phytoncides is a refreshing way to start the day.

Overcoming the various obstacles, the view from the mountaintop leaves hikers thrilled. Walking along the yellow-earth ridgeline and massive rock walls, you can take in panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, an awe-inspiring sight. Depending on the weather, you can capture photos with varying moods. Even when exhausted from reaching the summit, hikers eagerly document this rare and rewarding moment.

Many adventurers opt to tackle the full 6-kilometer Bijia Mountain Range Traverse, which includes Ximaoyan Rock, Zhizitou Mountain, and Bijia Mountain. With over 10 jagged peaks lined up, the difficulty is rated as medium to high, typically requiring over 5 hours to complete. This route is ideal for those truly seeking to push their limits. Casual hikers should carefully consider whether they’re up for the challenge—and mentally prepare for some serious leg soreness afterward.
