Outside this old-school ice shop in Hualien, crowds of people are lining up. The famously renowned “Fengchun Ice Shop” in the Shoufeng area has been delighting palates for over 60 years with its classic cane sugar ice and ultra-smooth taro ice.

Located in Shoufeng, Hualien, Fengchun Ice Shop has been a local favorite for over 60 years. It's not only a beloved taste that locals have grown up with but also draws visitors from far and wide who are willing to wait an hour or two just for it. Half of the small shop is taken up by ice-making machines, exuding a strong nostalgic vibe. The ice treats made using traditional methods simply taste uniquely different.

On the wall, you can see hand-written menus featuring the signature cane sugar ice series, homemade non-dairy ice cream, and traditional hard popsicles. What almost everyone gets is a bowl of cane sugar ice topped with charcoal-grilled red beans and malted taro. The taro has a delicate, silky texture with visible bits that leave a lingering fragrance in your mouth — taro lovers simply can’t resist. The charcoal-grilled red beans are not only silky and sweet but also have a hint of smokiness, a flavor you won’t find in regular shaved ice.

The cane sugar ice series also includes charcoal-grilled mung beans, charcoal-grilled red beans, natural pineapple, refreshing grass jelly, lotus seed with white fungus, and the aptly named “So Happy” — all for just NT$50 per bowl. The menu item “So Happy” implies eating it will make you happy, and it’s basically just cane sugar clear ice with two toppings.
