Spin, spin—claiming luggage is a must-do procedure for every passenger after landing, as everyone eagerly waits for their bags in front of the carousel. But recently, at Japanese airports, the baggage carousel has spun out more than just suitcases—it’s featured a “tuna,” putting on what looks like a “food show.” What seems like an ordinary luggage retrieval process has turned baggage carousels around the world into alternative exhibition spaces. The baggage carousel at Aomori Airport in Japan recently became a hot topic on social media, featuring a 140 cm-long “tuna” that was placed on a wooden stand and rotated along with passengers’ luggage. The realistic-looking tuna even had a label certified by the local fishing cooperative, and its humorous creativity quickly captured the attention of travelers. This eye-catching “tuna” was actually an art installation created by airline staff.

Speaking of creative airport baggage carousels, the “Oma tuna” from Japan is not the first of its kind. Kumamoto Airport in Kyushu once featured a “revolving sushi” display on its carousel, with giant shrimp sushi and sea urchin sushi spinning around, giving newly landed passengers a taste of Japan’s “food show.” Other examples include a nigiri sushi platter at Toyama Airport, a display of Hyuganatsu citrus and Miyazaki beef at Miyazaki Airport, and Sanuki udon noodles at Takamatsu Airport—all successfully generating buzz and promoting local specialties.

And Singapore’s Changi Airport, ranked the best in the world, has also featured signature dishes such as chili crab and satay right in the center of its baggage carousel, creating new forms of entertainment for international passengers waiting for their luggage. The airport has even created themed zones such as the Forest Valley and Canopy Park, where travelers can relax and complete baggage sorting quickly. In addition, Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific also introduced “lobster” displays, creatively using bright colors to highlight specially curated gift shops.
