The Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt Fresh Milk Egg Cake was established in 2008, but Mite, who loves egg cakes, had never seen such adorable plum blossom-shaped egg cakes before. They felt quite novel, but what intrigued me even more was how special the flavor actually was. With the bold claim of being a 【Fresh Milk Egg Cake】, I guessed it must have a unique taste.

Actually, before introducing this new stall in Taipei’s Neihu Lane 737 Night Market, which has only been around for two months, there’s something that really moved me. This spot used to be a crepe and pancake shop that Mite really liked — run by a young woman who, like me, loved egg cakes and pancakes. But it seems the small stall just didn’t earn enough to support her three kids. Not being able to eat her pancakes and crepes anymore made me feel truly disheartened Orz.

Even though I can’t enjoy those delicious crepes and pancakes anymore, every time I pass by Lane 737, I still glance over at that familiar stall.
That’s how I discovered this new egg cake shop — maybe it’s fate with the Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt, right?!
The signboard of Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt is really bright and eye-catching, so it shouldn’t be easy to miss. Yet I actually didn’t notice it even after it had been around for over two months — I feel so derelict OTZ.

Yes, you read that right — one fresh milk egg cake is only 2.5 NT!!! Even though I’m not sure how long this promotion will last, if you’re craving a snack or want to try something new, now’s the time to rush over!!

▲ Menu Options at Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt
Have you ever seen an egg cake shop with such a wide variety of combo choices!? I was so surprised my mouth literally dropped open.
Moreover, the price of a regular egg cake set of 10 pieces for just 25 NT is genuinely heartwarming. Forget comparing it to normal egg cakes — even when stacked up against filled wheel cakes, the cost-performance ratio is way higher than those other snacks.

▲ Fresh milk egg cake batter is filled with various flavored fillings, then hidden in the center, making it as hearty as a wheel cake.

▲ Aside from the original fresh milk egg cake, there are also eight other filling options to choose from.
(Left to right: Rich Cheese, Peanut Sesame, Matcha, Blueberry, Taro, Chocolate, Red Bean Fresh Milk, Cream)

▲ Although they are all egg cakes, there are also distinctions between large and small plum blossoms.
(Left: Special flavor large plum blossom Ancient Capital Burnt; Right: Original flavor small plum blossom Ancient Capital Burnt)

The cute plum blossom-shaped fresh milk egg cakes are out of the oven!!
Since each order is made fresh to order, you’ll probably have to wait about three minutes to get them. (Just like the freshly cooked stir-fried rice at Minsheng Stir-Fried Rice XD)

▲ The owner of Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt says the fresh milk egg cakes are soft on the outside when freshly baked, and only become even more delicious after going through their signature egg cake “hair dryer massage.”

▲ Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt’s custom box
I never expected such a small egg cake stall to have its own specialized paper boxes — the outer box clearly labels the combo and flavors, even more professionally convenient than McDonald’s.

▲ Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt egg cakes are printed with two different patterns — [Ancient Capital] and [Burnt] — on both sides.
Mite, feeling rather uncool for never having tried Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt before, decided to eat as many different flavors as possible.
So I ordered Combo #4: 2 each of Cream, Red Bean, Chocolate, and Taro (45 NT)
A whole box of 8 Plum Blossom Burnt cakes for just 45 NT — the price is honestly so friendly!!!

▲ Ancient Capital Plum Blossom Burnt Red Bean Flavor
The red bean was slightly overcooked, soft but lacking crunch. But none of that matters too much — the only real pity is that the sweetness is a bit weak.
Though it feels like the soul is missing, it’s still a great choice if you want something sweet without the guilt.

▲ GuDu Plum Blossom Pastry, Taro Flavor
The taro aroma is quite strong, but like the red bean-flavored fresh milk egg cake, it falls into the lightly sweet category.

▲ GuDu Plum Blossom Pastry, Chocolate Flavor
This chocolate didn’t disappoint me too much, as it’s different from the usual chocolate sauce added outside — it’s not that kind of sickly sweet, flavorless filler. But it’s still quite far from the original taste of chocolate. That said, the sweetness level is just right.

▲ GuDu Plum Blossom Pastry, Cream Flavor
Just like eating a Japanese taiyaki, the cream flavor is always a must-order. While the cream in GuDu Plum Blossom Pastry isn’t overly sweet, it’s just sweet enough, with sufficient aroma to complement the sweetness. It’s arguably the most perfect flavor. Indeed, the cream flavor is the most unbeatable and classic choice, no doubt about it.

Although the owner mentioned that the texture is less soft due to machine-blowing, it actually still feels quite soft and fluffy, somewhat similar to a bell-shaped pastry. Maybe it’s because I waited nearly half an hour before eating and missed the optimal taste window.
And while the variety of fillings is certainly novel, it would be better if the flavors could match the level of the cream filling.
I wonder how the original plain small plum blossom pastry tastes — perhaps it might be better than the filled ones, or maybe the other way around. It’s quite intriguing.
The plum blossom shape of GuDu Plum Blossom Pastry is undeniably cute, but the “[GuDu]” and “[Pastry]” characters on both sides give off a nostalgic, retro vibe. The soft egg cake exterior wrapped with various fillings gives traditional egg cakes a new dimension. Regardless of personal taste preferences, the clash of styles combined with the retro look and affordable price is more than enough to make you want to give it a try.
