This year marks the 9th edition of Tainan’s Meiling Firefly Season. Thanks to successful conservation efforts, excellent firefly sightings, breathtaking mountain night views, stargazing opportunities, and its well-established reputation over the years, the event has become a popular springtime destination across various circles. Visitor numbers have been growing rapidly in recent years.

The firefly season began on April 26 and has now entered its final week. With the rainy season underway, the city’s Tourism and Travel Bureau reminds visitors planning to go up the mountain to admire the fireflies to bring rain gear, warm outerwear, wear long-sleeved clothing, socks, and sports shoes, pay attention to nighttime mountain hiking safety, and wrap flashlights in red cellophane to quietly enjoy the firefly ecology. The most spectacular and safest time to view the fireflies is between 6pm and 8pm at the Shuichuzai area along the Wulong Trail, which is designated by the city government.

The Meiling Firefly Viewing event has been held for many years. During the event period, safety personnel conduct pre-hike mountain inspections, and pre-event education is arranged at the viewing entrance. In addition to teaching visitors the correct ecological awareness for firefly viewing, they are also reminded to pay attention to nighttime walking safety. Aside from setting up clear directional signs at relevant intersections and arranging safety personnel, the Tourism and Travel Bureau also provides a free shuttle service from the Meiling Information Station to Ercengping every year, offering considerate service to visitors. It is recommended that visitors make good use of this service.

The Tourism and Travel Bureau also specifically calls on drivers to pay extra attention to traffic safety—avoid driving while fatigued or under the influence of alcohol. Especially on Meiling’s steep and winding mountain roads, drivers must slow down, use low gears when going uphill or downhill, and exercise extra caution if unfamiliar with the road conditions.
