What happened to the ultra-short mini skirts? Japan’s low-cost carrier Skymark Airlines announced earlier this year that with the introduction of new aircraft this year, its flight attendants would also don new royal blue uniforms paired with super short mini skirts that sit 25 centimeters above the knee. But on the 14th, the day of the new plane’s maiden flight, the beautiful flight attendants dressed in their new uniforms were seen wearing skirts that were longer than expected.

Skymark Airlines President Shinichi Nishikubo stated at the press conference earlier this year introducing the new Airbus A330 model that he would inject fresh vitality into the new aircraft by having a group of young and beautiful flight attendants wear the new royal blue uniforms, along with super short mini skirts that show off their slender figures. This statement immediately attracted widespread attention and a wave of criticism, with many expressing concern that not only would the overly short skirts distract flight attendants from focusing on passenger service, but they could also lead to harassment issues.

According to Japanese mediaAviation Wirethe A330 operated by Skymark Airlines on its maiden “Haneda–Fukuoka” route on the 14th was observed to have flight attendants in brand new uniforms — but the rumored ultra-short mini skirts were nowhere to be seen. Instead, the attendants wore “slightly shorter” mini skirts that sat about 15 centimeters above the knee. Though still shorter than those typically worn by flight attendants, the change has significantly improved the safety and comfort of service.

Skymark Airlines flight attendants stated that the adjusted uniforms are indeed more convenient for work, and passengers on the inaugural flight praised the lengthened uniforms as cute and thought “the length is just right.” The “Haneda–Fukuoka” route, served by the Airbus A330, will offer 270 seats, with spacious green seats throughout the cabin. The airline plans to open additional routes to Sapporo and Naha in the future. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are also available on board, with soft drinks priced at 100 yen (about NT$30) per cup and beer at 200 yen per bottle — considerably cheaper than other low-cost carriers.
