Historic Japanese Buildings in Tainan Exude Literary Charm, Nurturing "Seeds of Literature"

Tainan, a city abundant in well-preserved Japanese-era architecture, has now seen the planting of literary seeds at the municipal heritage site “Tainan Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station – Type D Official Residence,” thanks to the efforts of the Tainan Cultural Affairs Bureau. Starting today, the site will not only offer a vast collection of books for public reading but will also become an important cultural and artistic hub for the greater Tainan area.

Only five dormitories remain from the former Tainan Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station compound, which dates back to the Taisho era. Among them, the two “Type D Junior Officials’ Residences” were restored last year (2013) and handed over to the Tainan Reading Association for a three-year management period. Renamed “Seeds of Literature,” the site reopened this year.

The Tainan Reading Association, which has long been dedicated to promoting reading, stated that “Seeds of Literature” will offer guided tours of the heritage site, as well as book sales and light beverages and snacks. The space will also host a series of reading-related activities such as themed book exhibitions, new book launches, and regular storytelling sessions. The goal is to plant the seeds of literature in Tainan, allowing them to sprout and grow, spreading the fragrance of books and the energy of reading throughout the greater Tainan area.
