Stroll through the colorful world of Maokong — the cosmos flower sea returns after mid-September

Do Taipei residents still remember the spectacular sight of the lobelia sea along the Camphor Tree Trail in Maokong every spring? To create vibrant seasonal color changes, the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau of Taipei City’s Public Works Department has planted a large number of cosmos flowers on the fallow farmland beside the trail. In just over a week, an orange carpet of cosmos will soon blanket the Camphor Tree Trail.

In recent years, the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau of Taipei City has actively promoted and coordinated with landowners along both sides of the Camphor Tree Trail to plant lobelia and cosmos during the fallow periods of spring and autumn respectively. When these flowers are in full bloom, they resemble colorful carpets laid out along the trail. Moreover, cosmos flowers thrive especially well during the autumn and winter seasons, making them highly suitable as green manure to restore soil fertility.

Xia Xiantong, head of the Roads and Trails Division at the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau of Taipei City, said that the cosmos flowering period can last about a month. Blooming has already begun, and a sea of cosmos flowers in Maokong is expected to become a hot topic again in mid to late September. However, Xia reminded visitors that such beautiful floral displays need everyone’s care. To allow more people to enjoy the scenery, please avoid stepping into the flower beds for photos or trampling on the blossoms.
