A Taiwanese Youth Cultural Mini Trip: Meicun Road in the Former U.S. Military Housing Area Has Become a Must-Visit Spot

At the end of July this year, Taichung officially surpassed Kaohsiung to become Taiwan’s second-largest city. If you have half a day to visit the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the tree-lined Art & Culture Boulevard area, you can also take a stroll to Meicun Road in West District, Taichung. This area was once home to the residences of U.S. military personnel stationed in Taiwan. Most of the old houses were originally designed as twin villas with courtyards, and after renovation, they have been transformed into restaurants, cafés, and specialty shops, making it a popular spot for Instagram-worthy photos.

“Creating a Fairy Tale”: Enjoy Ice Cream in a Forest Cabin

As we wandered through the alleys of Meicun Road, we discovered the forest cabin “PUGU Countryside Goods.” The lush courtyard is planted with plants such as Marsilea quadrifolia, Asparagus setaceus, Alocasia macrorrhizos, camphor trees, lantana, lavender, ferns, cypress, hydrangeas, and ivy. The shop also offers resin animals, woven animal figurines, tableware, and stationery imported from Japan—items that give off a Japanese lifestyle vibe.
