A living geography classroom — the breathtaking seascape of Nanfang’ao

This Nanfang’ao viewing platform (formerly known as the Zha’an Viewing Platform) is located along the Su-Hua Highway, right above Nanfang’ao. Even when it was just a roadside platform in the early days, it was already a popular spot for tourists to enjoy the scenery. Now, thanks to the efforts of the relevant authorities, it has been transformed into an official viewing platform where visitors can explore the beauty of Nanfang’ao’s fishing port more conveniently and safely.

If you're coming from Su'ao heading south, you'll reach here not long after passing Nanfang’ao. If you're traveling north from Hualien, arriving here means you've reached the end of the Su-Hua Highway. (In fact, there's another section on the Su-Hua Highway where you can see Turtle Island from a different angle — that view is also stunning.)

When the weather is good, the scenery here is truly fantastic!!! With azure seas and blue skies, it’s refreshing and uplifting — especially coming here in the afternoon to enjoy the sea breeze, it’s really comfortable.

What’s so special about this place? Actually, the terrain itself is quite remarkable. Many years ago, high school geography textbooks even used this spot as a cover photo because it’s a classic tombolo landform!! So it’s a living geography classroom. In addition, you can watch fishing boats head out to sea, observe the fun activities of visitors down below, and of course, right across from Nanfang’ao is Beifang’ao, home to the Navy’s Zhongzheng Base, where warships patrol!! That’s pretty impressive too.

The harbor area shown in the picture is Neipi Port, and the one on the right is Neipi Bay, also known as Lover’s Bay.

The scenery here changes constantly, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts.

We were here just before a typhoon, and the waves were crashing onto the shore!! This is also a spot where freak waves often occur, so be careful if you’re swimming or playing in the water.

This is Nan’an Junior High School — isn’t this campus environment lovely?
