The first cold front arrives, bringing 12.7°C in Tamsui and “rain mixed with snow” on Hehuanshan

The first cold front of winter arrived on the 2nd. The Central Weather Bureau stated today that abundant moisture led to snowfall starting at 6:25 AM on Yushan, accumulating 0.5 cm, while Hehuanshan also began experiencing “rain mixed with snow.” The strong continental cold front brought a chilly start to the day across Taiwan, with Tamsui recording the season’s lowest temperature of 12.7°C, followed by 13.3°C in Xinzhuang, Taoyuan, and 13.5°C in Yilan, Hsinchu, and Wuchi.

The weather bureau said that Yushan and Hehuanshan experienced rain mixed with snow in the early morning. Yushan Weather Station reported that snowfall began at 6:25 AM and was still ongoing. Hehuanshan is also currently seeing snowfall. Wu Wanchang, director of the Puyun Management Station at Yushan National Park Headquarters, said that snowfall began around 6:20 AM and by 9:00 AM, the snow accumulation had reached about 1.2 cm. Based on this week’s weather conditions, there is a chance of continued snowfall.

The Ren'ai Branch of Nantou County Police Bureau stated that currently, there are not many tourists or vehicles heading up the mountain, and no traffic control has been implemented on access roads. Police urge drivers to be cautious of poor visibility due to rainfall on mountain roads, to turn on their headlights, and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

The weather bureau forecasts that temperatures will slightly rebound tomorrow, but another cold spell is expected on the 4th and 5th, with lows in Yilan potentially dropping to 12°C and northern exposed areas possibly reaching 13°C. By the 7th, the cold front will weaken, and temperatures across the regions are expected to rise again. (News source: Central News Agency)
