Top 60 Safest Airlines in the World 2015 – Two Taiwanese Carriers Make the List

2014 could be described as the darkest year in aviation history, and “flight safety records” have become an important criterion for passengers when choosing airlines. The German aviation accident data evaluation center (Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre, JACDEC) recently released the “Top 60 Safest Airlines in the World.” EVA Air ranked 5th globally with a low safety coefficient of 0.010, while China Airlines came in at 58th. Both airlines are among the top performers out of more than 800 airlines worldwide.

The ranking is compiled by the aviation accident data evaluation center based on the flight records of over 800 airlines over the past 30 years, the number of air disasters, as well as major accidents, casualties, and passenger volume over the past 10 years. The lower the safety coefficient, the safer the airline.

Ranking first is Air New Zealand with a safety coefficient of 0.007, followed closely by Cathay Pacific and Finnair with coefficients of 0.008 and 0.010 respectively. Taiwan’s EVA Air is ranked 5th with the same safety coefficient of 0.010.

In light of the recent AirAsia crash at the end of last year, U.S. media outlet Business Insider also pointed to the current global shortage of pilots.The demand for Asian flights has surged, with new planes rolling off the production line every week but no pilots to fly them. The situation is particularly severe in Southeast Asia, where low salaries, brain drain, and insufficient training facilities have led to increased workloads for staff — a major challenge facing the aviation industry.
