Explore Nature’s Classroom: A Deep Dive into Taipei’s 5 Creeks

Surrounded by mountains and crisscrossed with numerous valleys, Taipei City boasts rich ecological resources. The Taipei City Government’s Department of Urban Development conducted a year-long ecological survey and discovered over 500 plant species and more than 230 terrestrial animal species around the city’s creeks. Five creeks—Xiaokeng Creek, Zhuzihhu Creek, Dagou Creek, Jingyue Creek, and Hushan Creek—are highly recommended for nature enthusiasts. This year, five creek eco-tours have been planned, where professional guides will lead participants to experience the pristine ecology of mountain forests and streams.
Xiaokeng Creek
Located on Zhengda 1st Street in Wenshan District, the creek features a water-friendly literary trail where visitors can spot small animals such as kingfishers and grey treepies.

Zhuzihhu Creek
Located in Beitou, Zhuzihhu Creek not only offers views of sea anemone and hydrangea flower seas but also hosts indicator species for stream environments such as the white-lipped water snake and the endangered Chinese box turtle. It’s also an excellent spot to view the red-necked black firefly.

Dagou Creek
In Neihu District, the upper reaches of Dagou Creek feature well-preserved multi-layered forests and rare natural geological landscapes. There are water-friendly trails for the public to experience the local ecology, such as the Formosan rock gecko, swallowtail butterflies, and a rich variety of large ferns under the tree canopy.

Jingyue Creek
As the water source area of Shilin District, Jingyue Creek allows visitors to stroll along water-friendly trails to admire cherry blossoms and maple foliage while interacting with stream creatures such as variegated carp and gobio fish.

Hushan Creek
Located at the foot of Hushan in the Four Beast Mountains of Xinyi District, Hushan Creek was designed with terraced riverbanks during its renovation. This design ensures a continuous flow of water even during dry periods, supporting the growth and habitat of various flora and fauna. Visitors may spot fireflies, Chinese tree frogs, Radde’s frog, and white-lipped water snakes.
