Bringing art into everyday life — the most carefree place to live: Zhishan Zhibai Art Village

Zhishan is located in the northwest of New Taipei City, bordered by Tamsui on the left and Shimen District on the right. Nestled between mountains and sea, it is perhaps best known for its white bamboo shoots, commonly referred to as “beauty legs.” Zhishan is also the hometown of former President Lee Teng-hui, which adds a touch of legendary color to this small town. But aside from that, do you know any other hidden secrets about Zhishan?

Upon arriving at Zhishan Zhibai Art Village, the entrance looks much like a typical residential community you might see in places like Taichung or Tainan. There are few decorations put up for tourists, no vendors following the flow of visitors. Instead, what greets you is a serene and peaceful atmosphere warmed by the bright sunshine.

Zhibai Art Village was originally just an ordinary residential community. The developer named it Zhibai Mountain Villa, and construction began around 1981. The architectural style was quite different from the common houses seen along the roads — rough cement surfaces painted white, detached two- to three-story buildings, each with a small front garden. It’s said that the initial intention was to create a style reminiscent of American homes. More than 20 years have passed. Whether due to its remote location or population outflow, Zhibai Mountain Villa has a high vacancy rate, and its residents are mostly elderly, naturally creating a simple and tranquil vibe. These weathered American-style homes have unexpectedly developed a more charming charm than they originally had.

Fate works in mysterious ways. Zhibai Mountain Villa, where property prices are much lower compared to other areas in Taipei, has in recent years unexpectedly attracted young artists in need of quiet spaces for creation. Gradually, it has formed an art community where life and aesthetics are inseparable. Mr. Li, the owner of the local pizzeria Pizza Olmo, told us this — and Mr. Li himself has a rather fascinating story to share.
