The parent-child DIY dough figurine experience that brought back childhood memories was so much fun. At Wu Family Dough Figurine Shop, we headed to Xihu Sugar Refinery in Changhua. We had seen other travelers visit before—it’s perfect for bringing kids along. There’s a large grassland, sand pits, slides, and you can even take a ride on the narrow-gauge train.
Xihu Sugar Refinery was originally a sugar production site operated by Taiwan Sugar Corporation. After ceasing sugar production, it transitioned toward preserving sugar industry history and repurposing cultural assets, gradually transforming into a leisure and tourism-focused sugar refinery. The refinery covers a vast area and includes four main zones: the Railway Culture Area, Sugar Industry Culture Area, Leisure Service Area, and Outdoor Activity Area. It’s an excellent destination for family outings where both adults and children have a great time.

As soon as we arrived, we headed straight for the grassland—here, the sand pit and slides are Xiaomi’s favorites.

Traveling always means packing a lot, which is a given for any family with kids. Sand play essentials are a must; be sure to keep a set in the car (haha).

The spacious grassland is the perfect playground for kids. Xiaomi and her brother had so much fun playing frisbee together—kids are happy as long as they have playmates.

On the grassland, you can spot some stunt kite flyers and people flying dragon kites. It was my first time seeing many small diamond-shaped kites strung together and flown high in the sky.
It looked just like a giant kite dragon—super spectacular.
While the kids played on the grass, we also brought a picnic mat to enjoy a relaxing picnic on the grassland.
When the brother and Xiaomi heard the train’s “choo choo” sounds, they immediately ran to the tracks to watch the train. Look at those two little ones—they were so focused.

We quickly packed up and took Xiaomi and her brother to experience the narrow-gauge train ride.
When visiting Xihu Sugar Refinery, you must try the narrow-gauge train ride. The round trip from Xihu Station to Zhuoshui Station takes about 50 minutes. The scenic farmland views along the way are something most kids rarely get to experience. On holidays, a train departs every hour, and there’s a guide on board who introduces the sights along the route, giving visitors a chance to learn more.
As we passed the grassland, others waved at us.
After getting off at the final stop, we walked around, took photos, and rested a bit before preparing to head back. After the narrow-gauge train ride, we were ready to go home—we’d been out all day and were pretty tired.
#A Little Detour on the Way Back
Dad accidentally lost Xiaomi’s Kitty slippers. When it was time to get off the train and she couldn’t find her shoes, the sleepy little girl started to fuss over losing her slippers. What should’ve been a perfectly joyful outing ended with a slight blemish (haha).
