Louvre Teams Up with VR Mona Lisa; Four Highlights at the Southern Palace Carnival

This year, the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum has once again surpassed one million visitors, and is launching four major events at the end of the year. On December 17th, there’s the “Southern Palace Fantasy Carnival: 21st Century Museums Special Exhibition” featuring an international-level VR launch; on the 21st, the “Fantasy Palace – Southern Palace Carnival” Music & Lifestyle Market will be held; on the 25th, the annual major exhibition “The Emperor’s Treasure Boxes Special Exhibition” opens; and on the 28th, the dazzling lantern festival “Southern Palace Wonderland” will be the grand finale.

On December 17th, the “Southern Palace Fantasy Carnival: 21st Century Museums Special Exhibition” combines thrilling virtual reality experiences from top museums around the world, including France’s Louvre, the UK’s Tate Modern, France’s Musée de l’Orangerie, Germany’s Alte Nationalgalerie, the Mucha Foundation, and HTC VIVE Arts. With new media art as the main theme, it features four major zones: “Radiant Light River,” “Palace Voyage,” “Louvre Station,” and “Aesthetic World.”

In addition to the internationally award-winning “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” series in VR, the event premieres an immersive experience for the “Qing Kangxi Imperial Gold-Inlaid Tibetan Dragon Sutra.” Moreover, it invites the latest virtual reality production “Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass” from the Louvre’s “Leonardo da Vinci 500th Anniversary Exhibition” to be exhibited simultaneously in Taiwan.

Also featured are the UK’s Tate Modern’s “Modigliani VR”; the global premiere of the Czech Mucha Foundation’s latest VR “Slav Epic Series: The Slavs of the Homeland,” which virtually reconstructs, at full scale and according to Mucha’s original designs, a museum that the artist was never able to build in his lifetime; and France’s Musée de l’Orangerie’s “Monet: Admiring the Water Lilies.”

The four highlights of the “Fantasy Palace – Southern Palace Carnival” party on December 21st include a “Fantasy Stage” music festival-level lineup, a “Playful Castle” inviting families to enjoy theater performances and stories, a “Wonder Workshop” hub of creative DIY stations, and a “Wonder Market” showcasing delicacies from all over Taiwan.
