Chen Xiu-kuan, a head chef who had run banquet services in Beigang for over 30 years, went hiking in Hualien County in 2012 to tackle the "Bilang to Yangtou Mountain Traverse" (毕羊纵走). He was suddenly hit by a strong continental cold front, causing temperatures to plummet, which led to hypothermia and his death. After his family filed a claim under their travel safety insurance, the insurance company concluded that Chen’s death was not caused by an external sudden accident and thus refused to pay. The family disagreed and took the case to court.
The Taipei District Court, after reviewing the lawsuit filed by the family, ruled based on the prosecutor's autopsy report that the 68-year-old Chen Xiu-kuan died from hypothermia due to external weather conditions, classifying it as an accidental incident not caused by illness. The court ordered Cooperativa di Crediti e Risparmio Taiyuan Life Insurance Company to compensate the family NT$3 million. The case can be appealed.
