Thrill Level No. 1: Macau Tower – Experience the SkyJump
Even a Superman wearing size S had to strap on a safety harness before daring to fly. Ever seen such a bold “Superman”? I was lucky enough to witness it — right here at Macau Tower.
This young “Superman” is from the UK and has been traveling the world since May. He finally made it to the long-awaited Macau Tower and tried the BUNGEE JUMP. While others wear the standard orange jumpsuit provided by the tower, he went for something unique — first heading to Hong Kong to buy a Superman costume, then showing off his new look in Macau. His appearance even prompted staff to ask for photos. When strapping on the safety harness, he joked, “I’m Superman — I don’t need this!” His friend dressed as “Buzz Lightyear” opted for the SKYJUMP, equally eye-catching.
The SkyJump is unique because it allows “tandem jumps.” A 9-year-old girl from Taiwan, Li Yuhan, jumped with her equally weighted friend (each weighing 35 kg, within the 120 kg limit). She exclaimed, “So… so fun, so… so thrilling, Mommy, I want to do it again!” Her mom, stunned but laughing, added, “The SkyJump ropes in Macau have a slight drag that slows your descent, unlike a free fall. As a mom, that makes me feel safer.”
Although ranked as the 10th tallest observation tower in the world, Macau Tower is incredibly fun thanks to its multifunctional design. Visitors can dine in the romantic revolving restaurant, enjoying views of the Inner Harbour, Outer Harbour, Zhuhai Bay, and Zhuhai City from various angles. After relaxing and calming your nerves, you can dive into thrilling experiences like the SkyJump, Skywalk, and Step to the Sky. From age 3 to 75, everyone can dare to try. Of course, all activities come at an extra cost, but even if you just “watch,” it’s still impressive and worth it.
World Heritage Site: The A-Ma Temple – A Century-Old Mansion Reborn
The Historic Centre of Macau comprises over 20 historical buildings and streets, showcasing the city’s history of East-West cultural exchange and coexistence. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site five years ago. The newly restored “A-Ma Temple” recently unveiled its long-hidden secrets after eight years of reconstruction.
Built in 1869, the A-Ma Temple is located opposite the A-Po Well area, where the Portuguese first settled. The neighborhood is filled with vibrant red-tiled, green-roofed, and yellow-walled Portuguese buildings. The modest-looking “A-Ma Temple” stands out with its simplicity, yet its elegance lies in the details. Take a closer look at the blend of Chinese and Western elements, such as the shell-shaped windows, intricate stucco murals, and the main hall Yuqing Tang, which was built without a single nail. This isn’t just a private residence — it’s a grand work of art.
Within this 120-meter-long mansion, China’s 19th-century thinker Zheng Guanying was raised. He wrote “Shengshi Weiyen” (Words of Warning in a Prosperous Age), which later influenced figures like Sun Yat-sen and Mao Zedong. The Zheng family later rented out parts of the mansion, housing up to 72 households and over 300 people. After a century of neglect, the mansion fell into disrepair. Thankfully, eight years of restoration and research have brought it back to its former glory.
Besides the A-Ma Temple, nearby Portuguese-style buildings, beautiful churches, the A-Ma Temple, the Maritime Museum, and Macau Peninsula’s iconic Ruins of St. Paul’s are all worth visiting. Additionally, the streets of Senado and Rua da Cunha are bustling with snack shops and pastry stores, perfect for sampling and shopping.
