On the 2nd, Shi Yuming, former chairman of the ?izi Community in Puyin Township, Changhua County, invited 16 assisted families with children from the Changhua Family Service Center for a free one-day farm tour at his own “Chairman’s Farm” to share the joy of harvesting. In addition to freely picking cherry tomatoes known as “Chungo,” the farm also treated guests to a “specialty meal” made with vegetables grown on-site.
Shi Yuming is a retired small and medium enterprise owner who previously served as the third chairman of the community development association. During his tenure, he led community development initiatives, spearheaded the renovation of a century-old ancient well, bringing back its flowing water, and fostered warmth among villagers. He was also honored as a “Local Model Citizen” by the provincial government in 2014. After stepping down as chairman, he was affectionately regarded as the “Eternal Chairman.”
Even in retirement, Shi Yuming said that growing up in a farming family, he didn’t want to sit idle. A few years ago, he used his own 3,000-square-meter plot of land—half for growing cherry tomatoes to sell, and the other half for planting vegetables to share with others. This fruit and vegetable garden was named the “Chairman’s Farm.”
“They’re only tasty when they’re red!” While guiding the children in picking cherry tomatoes, Shi Yuming explained that the tomatoes from the farm are usually harvested and sold at markets, but on weekends, visitors are welcome to pick them for NT$200 per basket. The other half of the farm grows cabbages, turnips, radishes, green onions, and more, all meant for sharing—so they are “free, not for sale.” “Seeing everyone happy makes me happy,” he said.
