38 crystal butterflies flutter like an art gallery display—Taipei Marriott’s average room rate in its first year is NT$7,500

Taipei Marriott Hotel began trial operations in August 2015, located near Miramar in Taipei’s Dazhi area, overlooking the Keelung River to the north with panoramic river views. It is currently Taiwan’s largest international convention and exhibition hotel, capable of accommodating 3,000 people simultaneously. Combining a hotel, convention center, shopping mall, and high-end residences, the property is surrounded by 60% green space, forming an urban oasis.Liu Hengchang, Managing Director of Taipei Marriott Hotelstated that the hotel invested NT$20 billion, with the mall section still under recruitment. The mall will adopt a lifestyle concept, and he noted that physical retail has limited growth potential. He hopes the mall’s tenants will encourage guests to explore and shop within the hotel.

Outside Taipei Marriott Hotel stands a landmark “butterfly” installation artwork. Public Relations Deputy Manager Hou Shurong explained:“Butterflies represent happiness in Spain. The idea came from an artist who saw butterflies dancing above pedestrians’ heads and drew inspiration from that.”Notably, the artwork faces Jiannan Mountain, where there is a butterfly trail. Hou Shurong added that Taipei Marriott Hotel hopes to promote Taiwan’s reputation as the “Kingdom of Butterflies” and bring joy to every guest.

Hou Shurong said Taipei Marriott Hotel blends modern and classical styles. Hanging from the ceiling at the entrance are handmade crystal butterflies—38 in total. Their bellies contain LED lights that glow beautifully at night.

The floor features a welcome carpet patterned with butterflies, designed in gray to match the hotel’s color scheme. Upon closer inspection, all butterflies face inward, symbolizing a warm welcome to guests.

At the reception desk, there is a mural. Hou Shurong said it is 9 meters tall and 10 meters wide, hand-painted with acrylic and watercolor. The painting incorporates Taiwanese elements, such asFormosan macaques and blue tits, inspired by the misty landscapes of Alishan in Taiwan.The blue peacock represents happiness. The artwork took seven full days to paint in Toronto, Canada, before being air-freighted to Taiwan—making it a precious piece.

With a 9-meter ceiling height, the space feels vast. To avoid a cold atmosphere, archways are used throughout.Each archway has a distinct design ambiance, with nine arches alone on the first floor. Precious artworks, such as a mural made of 101 gold-leaf butterflies and a “Red Cliff” artwork crafted from thumbtacks, can be found in every public area.

Hou Shurong said the thumbtacks alone on the Red Cliff artworknumber 400,000, each protruding about 1 cm.When spotlights shine on it, the piece creates stunning light-and-shadow effects. This Red Cliff artwork was exhibited in Shanghai in 2013 before being purchased by Marriott Hotels and displayed in the hotel’s first-floor restaurant.

The largest ballroom, the Marriott Ballroom, consists of the Wan and Hao halls, each with movable partitions to combine or separate spaces. Hou Shurong added that the hall houses six BOSE speakers for premium acoustics, along with nine screens. The column-free ballroom can accommodate up to 300 tables.

The Garden Kitchen on the first floor enjoys ample natural light, surrounded by green landscaping and large glass windows that flood the space with sunlight, creating a warm and vibrant atmosphere. Zhang Guo, Deputy General Manager of the restaurant, stated that the venue has 80 seats and aims to offer guests a garden-like dining experience. The restaurant uses healthy, traceable ingredients and fresh produce delivered directly from farms.

To ensure a more comfortable dining experience for guests, the restaurant uses glass partitions between sections. The middle section is transparent glass, while the upper and lower parts use frosted glass. This design not only separates diners but also creates a sense of privacy for each.

The open-style kitchen counter is also quite distinctive. Hou Shurong explained that the counter body is made of marble, while the countertop is crafted from highly realistic artificial stone that mimics marble. The reason for this design is that the countertop is less likely to absorb cooking juices and get damaged, and knives are also less likely to scratch the surface, combining both aesthetics and practicality.

Regarding room rates, Executive Director Liu Hengchang stated that during the soft opening period, the average room rate is around NT$7,000. The hotel has a total of 320 rooms, and the mall is expected to open in 2016.He expressed the hope of providing the best service for guests, which is why they aim to have all businesses in place before a full opening. He also mentioned that the Taiwan Tourism Bureau has made great efforts in promoting tourism, and the hotel will follow the bureau's lead to jointly promote tourism. In addition to government efforts, Taiwan's tourism also requires collaboration from all sectors. As Taipei’s 112th international tourist hotel, Taipei Marriott Hotel strives to offer better service quality and aims to attract international guests by providing high-quality services.
