Japan’s Alternative Taxi Tours: Ghost-Hunting Adventures or Snail-Speed Rides in Yokohama!

Traditional taxis offer travelers fast point-to-point service from A to B, but Japanese taxi company Sanwa Kotsu has introduced some unexpectedly strange tours and experiences. In addition to classic routes, visitors to Japan can now try these unique services and perhaps see a different side of the country!

1. Haunted Route
Cherry blossom viewing, snow viewing, and maple leaf viewing are no longer novel. This summer in Japan, you can join a “haunted spots pilgrimage tour” for a ghost-themed adventure!According to Japan Today,this special tour runs from July 24 to September 4, departing from Shin-Yokohama Station at 9 PM and lasting 90 minutes.
However, the taxi company keeps the exact locations under wraps but doesn’t shy away from saying, “We don’t even know what we’ll find there.” The route includes five stops such as tunnels, under railway bridges, and abandoned hotels, and the tour only operates on Fridays and Saturdays.

2. Turtle Taxi
More and more travelers are looking for relaxed journeys,reports Japan Daily Press,and the “Turtle Taxi” attracts customers by offering ultra-slow rides. Passengers can ask the driver to speed up or slow down. Since 2013, out of 500 taxis operated by the company, 10 have been designed for turtle-paced driving.
Once passengers board, they simply press the “ゆっくり” (slowly) button, and the taxi will proceed at a leisurely pace—not just a treat for passengers, but also a blessing for the elderly, pregnant women, and families with newborns. Currently, this service is only available in the Yokohama area.
