Chongqing Linyuan

Linyuan was the official residence of Lin Sen, Chairman of the National Government during the War of Resistance Against Japan. It is located on Shuanghe Street in Geleshan and was built in 1939. In 1943, Lin Sen passed away due to a car accident. Chiang Kai-shek then moved into Linyuan, residing in Building 1, while Soong Mei-ling lived in Building 2. Building 3 was used by Chiang for work and meetings. Lin Sen’s original residence became Building 4. On August 28, 1945, Comrade Mao Zedong flew from Yan’an to Chongqing to participate in the KMT-CPC negotiations. That evening, Chiang Kai-shek invited Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Wang Ruofei to Linyuan for a welcoming banquet. Mao and the others stayed in Building 2 that night. Early on the morning of August 29, Mao took a walk in the garden and unexpectedly encountered Chiang Kai-shek in the shade near the small auditorium. The two then sat down together at a nearby stone table to talk. Mao and his delegation left Linyuan on August 30. Linyuan is now a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.
