南通天宁禅寺，为全国重点文物保护单位，始建于唐朝（建年代无考），是市区年代久，规模较大而又保存较好的一座佛教寺院。它是南通江海地区现存的三座唐寺（狼山广教寺、如皋定慧寺、南通天宁寺）之一。
光孝塔位于天宁寺西北隅，其历史最久，有“未有城，先有塔，前人就塔建城”之说，此塔建于公元864年，塔身颀长玲珑，为濠河西北一景。交
