On July 6, 2013, everyone arrived at the meeting point early in high spirits. A group of over ten travelers set off as planned for their journey to Xique Liang. Along the way, they visited the renowned Shenghai Temple on Mount Haiduo and also encountered remnants of the Tang Dynasty Great Wall that ran alongside the road. The undulating mountain terrain, desolate gullies, ancient fortress ruins, tranquil reservoirs, and romantic wildflowers along the route sparked great interest among the group. They stopped to admire the sights, take photos, and capture the beautiful scenery and unexpected encounters. In the afternoon, the convoy arrived at the predetermined destination, Xique Liang. There, an endless expanse of mountaintop grassland stretched out, lush with flowers and grass. Various wildflowers swayed in the wind, competing in beauty and brilliance. The forest belts dotting the slopes resembled emerald and jade inlays on a green carpet. If you hadn’t been there yourself, you’d hardly believe that summer at Xique Liang resembles the enchanting countryside of Europe, as if stepping into a wonderful fairy tale world. Wang Yonghai, who believes in “getting an early start,” is studying the route map and preparing to ride ahead. At 3 p.m., the cyclists arrived one after another at the finish line set up in front of the government building of Guide County. After all the riders had arrived, a one-legged cyclist also showed up. With a professional road bike, helmet, and cycling gear, his legs were clearly not “standard” — nothing below the left knee, propelling the bike forward with just his right leg. Wang Yonghai, a farmer from Rizhao, Shandong, said this was a dream he had been preparing for over the years.
