Hongdunzi Canyon

Introduction Hongdunzi Canyon is located within Alxa Right Banner, Alxa League, approximately 54 kilometers south of the banner seat, over 60 kilometers from Ekenhuduuge Town in Alxa Right Banner, and 12 kilometers from Eribugai Sumu. The entire mountain is composed of reddish-brown wind-eroded sandstone, representing a typical Danxia landform. The grand canyon stretches from north to south in a “V” shape, extending about 5 kilometers. Formed through hundreds of millions of years of weathering and erosion, it boasts cliffs dozens of meters high, with the tallest reaching over 100 meters. These cliffs are dotted with caves of various sizes, resembling honeycombs and interconnected, serving as natural shelters for wildlife such as blue sheep, wild pigeons, and flying squirrels. The canyon features towering stone pagodas and clusters of peculiar rocks, including natural attractions such as “Frog Asking the Sky,” “One-Line Sky,” “Pigsy’s Mirror,” “Dragon Head,” and “Leaning Tower of Pisa,” which captivate visitors. In the middle of the canyon, a massive boulder juts out from the cliffside, resembling either a dragon head or a camel head, and is revered by locals as a sacred stone. About 5 kilometers east of the canyon stands the Textile Tower Cliff, which rises over 100 meters high and is extremely steep—viewed from the top, cars appear no larger than matchboxes. At the base of the cliff in the middle of the canyon lies a huge rock shaped like a stone frog with its mouth open to the sky. Locals believe it symbolizes a prayer for favorable weather and the well-being of the people.

The best time to visit Hongdunzi Canyon is in summer.
