Tianhe Park is a district-level comprehensive park located in Yuancun, Tianhe District, Guangzhou. It borders Tianfu Road to the west, Huangpu Avenue to the south, and Zhongshan Avenue to the north, offering very convenient transportation. The park covers a total area of 70.7 hectares, including 10 hectares of water bodies. Characterized primarily by its natural ecological landscape, Tianhe Park is planned with five functional areas: the Hundred Flowers Scenic Area, the Cultural, Sports & Entertainment Area, the Senior Citizens’ Activity Area, the Forest Leisure Area, and the Logistics Management Area.

Guangzhou Tianhe Park

The park boasts a comfortable environment with sprawling lawns, rolling hills, lush woods, and shimmering lakes, presenting a refreshing rural charm. The majestic north and south gates feature a 100-meter-wide square in front, with a unique architectural style, vibrant plant colors, and a compact layout that exudes the ambiance of a modern park. The most spectacular South Gate Central Axis Square is flanked by scenic forests and various palm plants, setting off the central three-dimensional octagonal flower stand, further highlighting the essence of Lingnan garden design. The symbolic White Dove Square, where flocks of doves fly freely under the blue sky, represents peace and hope. The park also features the distinctly Lingnan-style and elegantly serene garden masterpiece — “Yuehui Garden,” nestled by the willow-fringed and picturesque Liuhu Lake, creating a delightful contrast with the playful koi fish in the water. The exquisite and graceful “Yueshu Garden” is built around the picture-perfect Cuihu Lake, known as the “Jade Forest on Water,” making the serene Cuihu Lake a perfect spot for sketching, photography, and leisure. The 80,000-square-meter Hundred Flowers Scenic Area includes gardens such as the Tea Flower Garden, Azalea Garden, and Crepe Myrtle Garden, designed mainly with plants for distinct layers and rich colors. There’s also a circular double-eaved pavilion in the lake — the Lake Center Pavilion — that showcases great charm amid the park’s lake and mountain scenery. The solemn Deng Shichang Memorial Tomb serves as a base for patriotic education among youths, carrying profound educational significance. The park offers a variety of recreational facilities loved by visitors, including leisure yachts, fun bumper cars, exciting bumper boats, thrilling go-karts, Squirrel Coaster, forest hunting, swimming pools, tennis courts, badminton courts, sea lion performance halls, children’s playgrounds, as well as educational science projects like Magic Forest and the Harbin Ice and Snow Sculpture Exhibition, attracting millions of domestic and international tourists every year.

The Liao Bingxiong Art Plaza features a composite environmental sculpture, consisting of the main sculpture “Portrait of Liao Bingxiong” and two relief sculptures, “Self-Mockery” and “Haircutting,” forming a folding-screen-style wall. The wall is made of hard granite, with steel plate etchings of representative works from different periods of Mr. Liao Bingxiong’s career embedded along the middle. In addition to the folding-screen wall, 58 bamboo shoot-shaped small sculptures are randomly erected on the ground, with the potential for more additions, and award-winning works from each animation competition can be engraved on the circular inclined surface, representing the continuous growth of artistic vitality. The entire art plaza embodies the continuity of Lingnan culture and the unceasing progress of comics.

Yuehui Garden not only fully reflects the artistic characteristics of traditional Chinese gardens but also showcases the fusion of Chinese and Western garden design. Nestled within greenery, Yuehui Garden covers only about 3,000 square meters but is divided into eight scenic spots: June Boat Song, Cliff Stone with Hanging Tassels, Flower Island with Coconut Shadows, Secluded Valley with Jumping Fountains, Sunflower Pool with Zither Melody, Pearl River Overflowing with Emotion, Painted Boat Resting on Emerald, and Scenic Spots of Southern Guangdong. It follows the traditional Chinese garden technique of “gardens within gardens.” Though relatively independent and uniquely themed, the scenes are interconnected via garden paths, all tied together by the relationship between the garden and nature or regional cultural meanings, forming a unified whole.

In October 1999, at the “International Horticultural Exposition in Kunming,” the “Yuehui Garden” built by the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Gardens and Forestry won the top prize, receiving the “Best Exhibition Award” for outdoor gardens.

Yueshu Garden is designed with the aesthetic of a Lingnan water town courtyard, incorporating features of traditional Guangdong folk architecture, which are then artistically elevated to reflect the simple and warm style of Guangdong folk buildings. The main concept of the garden is “Moonlight Streaming and Clouds Drifting, Sipping Wine and Listening to Springs.” A winding path leads visitors through a secluded journey; murmuring streams bring movement to the tranquility, complemented by a rustic bridge that adds texture. A wooden gate features a running script couplet that reads, “Hundred-mile Prosperity of Yuejiang Adorns Village Trees, A Thousand Gates of Huajing Bathe in Morning Breeze,” with a horizontal plaque inscribed with “Ningtan,” elegant and ethereal.

The plants in the garden are carefully selected and appropriately arranged, achieving just the right balance in both volume and color — rich without being extravagant, subtle without being dull, full of the charm of a rustic cottage. At the entrance, the welcoming stone carving of “Yueshu Garden” in running script, penned by Governor Lu Ruihua, adds significant charm to the entire garden. Yueshu Garden has won fifteen awards, including the “Governor’s Award,” Design Gold Award, and Garden Construction Silver Award, and stands as a representative work of Lingnan garden art in China.

Deng Shichang Statue Located in Tianhe Park, in front of the Deng Shichang Memorial Tomb, the statue has the inscription “National Hero Deng Shichang” on the front of its base and a biography of Deng’s life on the back.

Deng Shichang Memorial Tomb. National hero Deng Shichang (1849–1894), originally named Yongchang and styled Zhengqing, was from Panyu, Guangdong. On September 17, 1894, he died a heroic death in a naval battle against Japanese invaders. Members of the Deng family buried him on Shigu Ridge at Tianpingjia, Shawan, Guangzhou. Later, due to changing circumstances, the site was forgotten. In 1984, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Deng Shichang’s martyrdom and with the support of the Shawan Town government and related individuals, his tomb was rediscovered. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the First Sino-Japanese War, the municipal government decided to relocate Deng Shichang’s tomb back to Dongjiao Park, erecting a statue and memorial garden to honor his bravery and ensure lasting reverence for future generations.
