South China University of Technology

South China University of Technology is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, located in the southern city of Guangzhou, covering an area of approximately 4.05 million square meters. The campus is divided into three campuses. The Wushan Campus is situated in the Shiqi Higher Education Zone of Tianhe District, Guangzhou, featuring picturesque lakes and hills, lush trees and flowers, as well as a harmonious blend of traditional ethnic-style architecture and modern buildings. It boasts a rich cultural heritage and has been designated as a “Civilized Campus” by the Ministry of Education. The University Town Campus is located within Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center in Panyu District, Guangzhou. It is a modern campus with beautiful surroundings, advanced facilities, well-established management, and innovative systems. The Guangzhou International Campus is situated in the Innovation City of Panyu District, Guangzhou, facing Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center across the river. The three campuses complement each other and provide an ideal environment for students to pursue their studies.

Originally named South China Institute of Technology, the university was established in 1952 during the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions. It was formed on the basis of the School of Engineering of Sun Yat-sen University, the School of Engineering of South China Union University, the engineering departments and programs of the Lingnan University School of Engineering, and the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Technology, along with selected engineering departments and programs from five other institutions: Hunan University, Zhonghua University in Wuchang, Wuhan Communications Institute, Nanchang University, and Guangxi University. In 1988, it was renamed to its current name. The university has a long history of education. The School of Engineering of Sun Yat-sen University, which formed part of its foundation, originated from the College of Science and Engineering of the National Sun Yat-sen University, established in 1931. The School of Engineering of South China Union University was formed through the merger of the engineering department of the privately-run Kwangtung National University (founded in 1930) and that of the privately-run Guangzhou University (founded in 1940). The Lingnan University School of Engineering can be traced back to the engineering department of Lingnan University, established in 1930. The predecessor of the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Technology was the First Guangdong Provincial Higher Industrial School, founded in 1918, with a history that dates back to the Guangdong Arts and Crafts Bureau established by the Qing government in 1910. These institutions were cradles for nurturing senior engineering and technical talents in early southern China, as well as important sources of democratic and scientific thought.
