The Guangzhou Asian Games Cultural Village officially broke ground in December 2007 and was completed by the end of 2009. With a total construction area of approximately 1.39 million square meters, it could accommodate nearly 50,000 people during the Games. The Guangzhou Asian Games Village utilizes natural waterways and roads as dividing lines to form six major functional zones: the Athletes' Village, Media Village, Technical Officials' Village, Logistics Service Area, Sports Venue Area, and Asian Games Park. It is set to become one of the rare "garden-style residential communities" in Guangzhou—with a plot ratio of 0.52, building density of 12.2%, and green space coverage as high as 55.9%.

The Athletes' Village is located in the central part of the Asian Games Village and is divided into three sections: the Residential Area, International Zone, and Public Area. The Residential Area consists of four independent clusters that use landscaping and garden design techniques to reflect the "enclosed courtyard" characteristics of the Lingnan water town. As a residential community within Guangzhou's new urban area, the Athletes' Village will be permanently retained after the Games, with residential space allocated at no less than 25 square meters per person. The Media Village comprises two residential clusters in the western part of the Asian Games Village, mainly consisting of buildings that are 18–25 stories high. The Sports Venue Area is one of the competition venues, situated across the water from the International Zone of the Athletes' Village. It is planned to include a comprehensive sports complex, featuring one squash hall, one billiards hall, and one chess hall. The total construction area of the sports venues is 33,000 square meters. The venues benefit from excellent waterfront locations, offering a beautiful and comfortable environment. The ground floor of the sports complex houses the Guangzhou Asian Games Exhibition Hall. The Asian Games Park is planned to include a beach volleyball competition venue, which will remain as a permanent beach volleyball court after the Games.
