Haigou Island in Panyu is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Guangzhou's Haigou Island is located within Shilou Town in Panyu District and is an important part of Guangzhou New City. It is expected to become a new highlight in the tourism system of the entire Pearl River Delta region. The island covers an area of 34.61 square kilometers and has a coastline stretching 37.96 kilometers. There are four administrative villages on the island: Shabei, Shanan, Jiang’ou, and Haixin. A sea-crossing bridge at the northern end of the island, the Haigou Bridge, spans the Lianhuashan Waterway, connecting the island to the outside. A 13-kilometer-long district-level road runs from north to south through the entire island, with all villages accessible by road and equipped with electricity and water, and basic living facilities are relatively well-developed. The island’s main industries are farming and aquaculture. Major crops include rice, bananas, and flowers; the main types of aquaculture are the “four major domestic fishes,” along with specialty farming such as fish and shrimp in rice paddies and the cultivation of rice field worms.

The three most famous things on Haigou Island are fish, shrimp, and crabs. The seafood sold at the seaside eateries is the freshest you can get. The owners of these eateries set their nets (or cast their fishing lines) right by your table—the huge nets, some as big as several rooms, are dropped directly into the sea, and you can even lend a hand to pull them up. If you’re lucky, the catch will be served up fresh that very day, so what you get and how much depends entirely on nature’s mood. Small fishing boats also shuttle back and forth across the sea, delivering their freshly caught fish straight to the kitchens.

Transportation: 1. Take Metro Line 3 in Guangzhou to Shiqiao Station, then walk about 300 meters from the west exit of Shiqiao Metro; 2. Take the dedicated Haigou Island bus route, Panyu 148, from within Guangzhou.

Self-driving Route: From Huangpu Avenue, take the Huannan Expressway, exit at Luntou, enter the Nansha Expressway, exit at Qinghe Road, drive along Qinghe Road, turn left when you see the sign for Lotus Mountain, follow the road signs, and you’ll reach Haigou Island after crossing the Haigou Bridge.

Shilou Town: On the shores of the Lion Sea in the eastern part of Panyu District stands a civilized, prosperous, and beautiful coastal town—Shilou Town. The beautiful Pearl River runs through the town from north to south. To the south, it borders the special economic zones of Shenzhen and Zhuhai, as well as Hong Kong and Macau; to the east, it neighbors Dongguan; to the north, it connects to Guangzhou, facing Huangpu Port across the river.

Shilou Town covers a total area of 126.5 square kilometers, with a population of over 120,000. It is an industrial satellite town in the Pearl River Delta, a science and technology town in the Guangzhou area, a model town for civilization in Guangzhou, a pilot town for comprehensive reform in small towns in Guangdong Province, and a central town in both Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City.
