Guangdong University of Technology was established in June 1995 through the merger of the former Guangdong Institute of Technology, Guangdong Mechanical Institute, and South China Construction Institute (East Campus). With nearly 60 years of educational history, it is a provincial key university that emphasizes engineering while integrating science, economics, management, humanities, law, and art. It is a multi-disciplinary and harmoniously developed institution. It is also a key provincial university under Guangdong’s High-Level University Development Plan.

The university is located in Guangzhou, a renowned city in southern China, enjoying a prime geographical position. It spans a total area of 3,348 acres and comprises multiple campuses, including those in University Town, Dongfeng Road, and Longdong. The University Town campus highlights engineering disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and establishing several collaborative innovation research platforms. The Dongfeng Road campus emphasizes an atmosphere of artistic creativity and social work services, featuring a design innovation park and an achievement exhibition hall. The Longdong campus focuses on creating an environment conducive to management and science disciplines, offering a beautiful and tranquil garden-style campus.

Currently, the university has 19 colleges, 4 public teaching departments (centers), 5 postdoctoral research stations, 5 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 27 second-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 20 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 88 second-level discipline master's degree authorization points (including MBA), 3 first-level provincial pillar key disciplines, 7 first-level provincial advantage key disciplines, 5 second-level provincial characteristic key disciplines. It offers 5 types of professional master's degrees: Master of Engineering (17 fields), Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering Management, Master of Accounting, and Master of Translation. It also provides the opportunity for individuals with equivalent academic qualifications to apply for a master's degree. The university currently offers 84 undergraduate programs. Since 2014, all undergraduate programs have been admitted in the first batch of undergraduate admissions in Guangdong Province’s regular higher education institutions. The four disciplines of mechanical engineering, information technology, materials science, and chemical engineering are key construction disciplines in the third phase of Guangdong Province’s “211 Project.” Since 2012, the engineering discipline has ranked within the top 1% of the ESI world rankings. In July 2017, materials science also entered the top 1% of the ESI world rankings.
