The Cliff Carvings on Horsehead Mountain are a cultural relic protection unit of Lianshan County.

The Cliff Carvings on Horsehead Mountain are located on Horsehead Mountain, about five kilometers south of Xiaosanjian Town in Lianshan County. Since the Ming Dynasty, Horsehead Mountain has served as a refuge for local Zhuang people from Xiaosanjian’s villages during times of turmoil. Today, the mountain still retains remnants of earthen-wall houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including both watchtowers and residential buildings. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a large rock face was discovered on the mountainside of the northern slope of the mountain, where cliff carvings were found. These carvings were engraved in the 11th year of the Xianfeng reign of the Qing Dynasty (1861), with a total of 261 characters. They provide a relatively detailed account of the activities of Chen Jinqiong (note: the character for “qiong” in Chen Jinqiong’s name has also been written as “gang” or “gong”; in 1964, an iron cannon inscribed with Chen Jinqiong’s name was unearthed in Renhua County, where the character “gong” is composed of “metal” and “work,” hence it is uniformly written as “qiong”), Zhai Huogu, as well as the warfare that occurred locally.

In 1990, the People’s Government of Lianshan County designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.

Xiaosanjian Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Lianshan Zhuang and Yao Autonomous County. Established as Shengsan Township in 1939, it was renamed Xiaosanjian Commune in 1960, upgraded to a district in 1983, and became a town in 1986. Located in the southern part of the county, it is 50 kilometers from the county seat. It covers an area of 125.1 square kilometers and has a population of 9,000. Provincial Highway 1960 runs through the town. The town administers nine village-level divisions (village committees): Lixing, Shengdong, Jianglian, Sanlian, Tianxin, Sancai, Zhiping, Zhenxing, and Luming.
