Tamin Chagan Desert is a cultural tourism attraction.

The gleaming, undulating “Tamin Chagan Desert” stretches from the eastern part of Naiman Banner into Kulun Banner, winding its way into Horqin Left Rear Banner, and is known as the “Eight Hundred Li Sea of Sand.” (Tamin Chagan, in Mongolian, means “devil” or “hell.”) The Tamin Chagan Desert runs from east to west, situated along the southern edge of the sandy and grassy zone in northern Kulun, at an altitude of 250 to 300 meters. Within the banner, it extends approximately 60 kilometers in length and about 5 kilometers in width, covering a total area of 280 square kilometers. It spans across six townships and sumus: Liujiazi Town, Manghan Sumu, Elesun Town, and Kulun Town. Transportation is convenient. In this vast sea of sand, vegetation is sparse. Aside from a small amount of sandy vegetation such as yellow willow, sand sagebrush, and camel thorn growing in the interior, the landscape is dominated by glistening golden dunes. Some dunes reach heights of 70–80 meters, stretching continuously as far as the eye can see. On scorching summer days, mirages occasionally appear deep in the desert—sometimes resembling pavilions and palaces, other times like cityscapes—fleeting and dreamlike. It is an outstanding eco-tourism destination within Kulun Banner and also the largest desert belt in Northeast China. In 2005, investors from Horqin Left Rear Banner established the Tamin Chagan Desert Tourist Area at the Third Sub-farm of Wafang Ranch in Kulun Banner. The area added recreational activities such as desert horseback riding, camel riding, desert exploration, sandboarding, beach volleyball, football, and dune buggies. Since its opening, it has welcomed over 10,000 domestic and international visitors.
