Wutu Mountain

Wutu Mountain is located in the northwest of Luhe County, in the eastern part of Guangdong Province. It spans across three counties: Haifeng, Zijin, and Huidong. The mountain gets its name from its towering, protruding shape and hazy appearance when viewed from afar. Composed mainly of granite, most of its peaks rise above 700 meters in elevation. With steep terrain and numerous rugged summits, its main peak stands at 1,223 meters, making it the highest peak in Luhe County, while the adjacent smaller Wutu Peak reaches 1,208 meters. The northern face is steep with crisscrossing ravines, while the southern slope is slightly more gentle. The mountain slopes downward to the east from the main peak over a distance of about 2,000 meters, and it runs in a northwest–southeast direction. The surface soil consists of southern meadow soil, yellow soil, and red soil.

The mountaintop is predominantly covered by shrubs such as silvergrass and rhododendrons from the tea family, with a coverage rate of 99%. Mid and lower slopes are planted with trees including Chinese fir, pine, Chinese sweet gum, moso bamboo, and various other species. The mid-slopes host patches of secondary subtropical evergreen monsoon forest. The area contains deposits of tin and quartz crystals. Major wild animals in the region include goats, wild boars, foxes, and muntjacs. The mountain paths are rugged and winding, and the summit is often shrouded in mist. Roads are accessible up to 4 kilometers from the mountain’s base.
