The lake system of the East African Rift

The stunningly beautiful Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley was the first natural heritage site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at this session of the World Heritage Committee. This site comprises three interconnected, relatively shallow lakes in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province—Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru, and Lake Elementaita—forming an exceptionally scenic lake system covering a total area of 32,034 hectares.

The Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley region is one of the most bird-rich areas in the world, home to 13 endangered bird species. It serves not only as a vital feeding ground for lesser flamingos but also as a nesting and breeding site for great white pelicans. The area also hosts a significant population of large mammals, such as black rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, elands, lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs, making it of great value for the study of major ecological processes.
