Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is located in the south of Nakuru, the capital of Kenya's Rift Valley Province, covering an area of 188 square kilometers. It is a park specifically established to protect birds and one of Kenya’s wildlife reserves. In 1960, Lake Nakuru, along with the nearby grasslands, swamps, woodlands, and mountains, was designated as a bird sanctuary. It was officially established as a national park in 1968, making it one of the earliest national parks in Africa created for the protection of birds.

Lake Nakuru National Park is renowned for its flamingos and is famously known as the Pink Lake. Flocks of flamingos often number in the tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands. They either swim in the lake or wander along the shallows, appearing calm and serene. When they feel lively, they gracefully spread their wings and dance, transforming Lake Nakuru into a dazzling spectacle of shimmering water and vibrant birds, all painted in shades of red. Once they tire of the display, they take to the skies en masse, soaring high above like massive crimson clouds. This extraordinary transformation is hailed as “one of the most spectacular sights in the avian kingdom of the world.”

Thanks to the mild climate, calm waters, and abundant aquatic vegetation, in addition to flamingos, the park is home to over 400 species of rare birds, numbering in the millions. Among the dense lakeside forests dwell carnivorous birds such as the brown snake eagle and long-crested eagle, as well as migratory birds like sandpipers and plovers. There are also cuckoos, kingfishers, starlings, and sunbirds. The entire Lake Nakuru National Park is a paradise for a diverse array of birdlife. Each year, many ornithologists from around the world come here to conduct research, which is why it is also known as a “paradise for birdwatchers.”
