Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya, an eastern African country, and one of the freshwater lakes in the East African Rift. Located about 90 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, it lies within the Rift Valley. The lake was formed by tectonic subsidence, stretching 20 kilometers from north to south and 13 kilometers from east to west, with a maximum depth of 20 meters and a surface elevation of 1,844 meters, making it the highest lake in the East African Rift.

The name “Naivasha” is derived from the pronunciation of “Nai’posha” by the local Maasai people, meaning “rough water,” as the lake’s water level can rise dramatically during storms, posing risks to nearby residents. Lake Naivasha is Kenya’s only freshwater lake and also considered its most beautiful. It features vast papyrus swamps along its shores and is home to a “Country Club.” Though slightly alkaline, the lake water is drinkable. The lake is inhabited by species such as tilapia and perch, and its shores host nearly 400 species of birds, including flamingos, as well as hippos and various waterfowl.

Between 1937 and 1950, Lake Naivasha served as a mooring point for airships that transported passengers and mail between Britain and South Africa, connecting Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and Kisumu. The renowned author Joy Adamson lived here during that time and wrote her beloved book “Born Free.”
