Lake Baringo

Lake Baringo is located 280 kilometers north of Kenya's capital, Nairobi. It is the northernmost freshwater lake in the East African Rift Valley region and a large freshwater lake renowned for birdwatching.

With an area of about 130 square kilometers, Lake Baringo is 19 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide, with a depth of 7.6 meters. It was formed by fault subsidence and is fed by two rivers. Surrounded by mountains, the lake features a series of picturesque islands and is dotted with hippos splashing in the water, making for truly stunning scenery. Due to its abundant freshwater resources and low human activity, the lake is home to a rich diversity of birds—over 470 species—making it a paradise for birdwatching in Kenya. Many visitors come here specifically to see the rare African flamingos.

The scenery at Lake Baringo is poetic, the atmosphere relaxed, and wildlife abundant. Perhaps it is the most remote and pastoral lake in the Rift Valley Province. In January 2002, it became the fourth wetland in Kenya to be designated under the Ramsar Convention, and has since become a major tourist highlight in the country.
