Cape Floristic Region

The Cape Floristic Region, a heritage site in South Africa's Western Cape Province, is located in both the Eastern and Western Cape provinces. It consists of eight protected areas covering 553,000 hectares. The Cape Floristic Region is one of the most botanically rich places in the world. Though it covers less than 0.5% of Africa’s land area, it is home to nearly 20% of the continent’s plant species, and its exceptional vegetation diversity, density, and level of endemism are unique on a global scale. For example, the region’s distinctive capacity for plant self-regeneration and seed dispersal by insects hold unique scientific value.
