The valley is a highly intensive agricultural region, especially renowned for its citrus fruits, making it one of South Africa’s most important citrus production areas. Irrigation initiatives began in the early 1920s, primarily to support British settlers living along the Sundays River, and have since developed into a highly sophisticated irrigation system.

A dam has been built on the Sundays River, and a canal connects the citrus-growing town of Kirkwood with the river, ensuring an ample water supply for farms. In addition, the area has a thriving tourism industry, famous across South Africa for its roses, game farms, as well as its annual wildlife festival, microlight aircraft, and 4x4 events. With relatively well-developed living services and recreational facilities, it attracts many visitors every year.
