Albany Museum

The Albany Museum is located in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Established in 1855, it is the second oldest museum in South Africa and serves as a provincial museum established by the Eastern Cape. Part of Rhodes University, the museum primarily focuses on the natural history and geology of the Eastern Cape region.

The Albany Museum consists of seven major buildings, including the Natural Science Museum, History Museum, Observatory Museum, Selborne House, and the Old Provost military prison. The Natural Science Museum houses collections of terrestrial insects, freshwater invertebrates, freshwater fish, plant specimens, birds, paleontological fossils, rocks and minerals, ethnology, and archaeological finds. The History Museum holds a series of historically significant items related to the 1820 British Settlers, making it of great historical and research value. The Albany Museum is open to the public from 9:00 to 16:30 Monday to Friday, and is closed on weekends and public holidays.
