Bhisho, South Africa

Bhisho is the capital of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Its name originates from the Xhosa language, meaning "buffalo." During the apartheid era, it served as the capital of the bantustan of Ciskei. A major incident occurred here in 1992, and the city was officially renamed to its current name in 2004.

Bhisho is known for the "Bhisho Massacre." On September 7, 1992, the Ciskei Defence Force opened fire on a protest organized by the African National Congress calling for the president's resignation. Twenty-eight people were killed and hundreds injured in the event, which became known as the "Bhisho Massacre."
