Castle of Good Hope

After the Dutch colonists occupied Cape Town, they intended to turn it into a supply station for merchant ships traveling between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies. In 1664, relations between Britain and the Netherlands were tense, with rumors of an impending war. That same year, the Dutch decided to build a permanent stone fortress near Cape Town, which later became the Castle of Good Hope.

The Castle of Good Hope was first built by the Dutch East India Company in 1666 and was not completed until 1679, making it the oldest colonial building in South Africa. The site where the Castle now stands was originally occupied by a fort constructed from mud and wood in 1654. With the exception of two double-story bastions, the rest of the original fort was replaced by the Castle of Good Hope. Upon completion, the Castle housed a church, bakery, workshops for various functions, living quarters, shops, a prison, and many other facilities, resembling a fully functional small town. The castle walls were painted entirely yellow to reduce heat effects and strong sunlight exposure. Today, the Castle of Good Hope is a renowned tourist attraction in Cape Town, featuring facilities such as the Castle Military Museum and the ceremonial hall of the traditional Cape regiments.
