Due to its proximity to the South African Parliament, during the apartheid era, Green Market Square was also a major site for political protests.

During specific historical periods, Green Market Square played different roles. Today, it has transformed into a bustling flea market, primarily selling exquisitely crafted South African souvenirs, handicrafts, antiques, as well as trendy local clothing, shoes... The variety of goods sold by vendors is dazzling and overwhelming.
