Mostert’s Mill

Mostert’s Mill is located in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, near the University of Cape Town. Built in 1796, it is the oldest surviving and only still-operational windmill in South Africa. Today, this white windmill has become one of Cape Town’s most famous tourist attractions, drawing visitors from around the world with its long history.

Originally privately owned and the only private mill in Cape Town, Mostert’s Mill ceased operation in 1873 and remained in the ownership of the Mostert family until 1889. During that time, it operated intermittently before being abandoned again before World War II. The mill has three floors and is a tower mill with a base diameter of 7.94 meters and a height of 6.68 meters. The lower 2.28 meters are built from stone, while the upper part is constructed of brick, with walls 1.15 meters thick and extremely sturdy. Mostert’s Mill is one of the most iconic architectural landmarks on Devil’s Peak in Cape Town and is open to the public once a month, on a Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
