Vik Town is situated at the southernmost part of Iceland and is an unmissable destination. Aside from its convenient location along Iceland’s Route 1, just 180 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik, the scenery along the way will not disappoint: volcanoes, waterfalls, rivers and lakes, glaciers, and striking mountain vistas—all of which encourage you to take your time, until you finally arrive in Vik.

Vik Town is a peaceful and harmonious little town, with the vast ocean stretching out behind it. The town is most famous for its black sand beach, which was ranked by the U.S. Islands Magazine in 1991 as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. Its black color is natural and pure, and the seawater remains crystal clear without being affected, shimmering with a golden glow under the sunlight.

Take an amphibious boat out to sea, and as you glide through the embrace of the Atlantic, accompanied by the cries of seabirds, the warm sea breeze, and the sunshine, you’ll see several small islands ahead that resemble traditional Chinese brush racks. Due to global warming and rising sea levels, what were once towering mountains over a century ago have been reduced to just their peaks, now serving as a haven for seabirds.
