Viðey Island

Viðey Island is an island in Reykjavík formed by a volcanic eruption in ancient times and is connected to the city by ferry. During the Ice Age, about two million years ago, this area was a volcanic zone with frequent eruptions and tsunamis; nine thousand years ago, the glacier receded, and the volcanic island emerged from the sea.

In 1225, the Bishop of Iceland built a monastery on the island. After it was burned down by the Danes, Viðey Church was designed and constructed in 1774 by the Danish royal palace architect — this is the second oldest church and monastery in Iceland. In 1751, the island became a fief of the Finance Minister, and Iceland’s first stone residence was built using basalt and sandstone. Viðey Island is known for having 156 species of seaweed and over 30 types of birds. In summer, the entire island is covered in lush green grass, offering beautiful scenery.

Starting from October 9, 2007, the lampposts on Viðey Island can be seen from as far away as the capital, Reykjavík, symbolizing the importance of world peace. This conceptual art piece was conceived as early as the 1960s by Yoko Ono, the renowned artist and widow of Beatles member John Lennon, together with her husband. It was Yoko Ono herself who chose to build the lighthouse in Reykjavík, as Iceland has never had an army and is a global role model in environmental issues.
