Kópavogur

Kópavogur is located on the southeastern shore of Faxa Bay, south of the capital Reykjavík, and is also part of the Greater Reykjavík area. The city is Iceland’s second-largest and a rapidly developing suburb of the capital. By the early 1970s, it had become one of the country’s largest cities and one of Iceland’s main fishing ports, serving as an important base for North Atlantic whaling fleets.

The most striking feature of Kópavogur’s skyline is the Kópavogur Cathedral, whose distinctive dome is visible from afar, showcasing its majestic presence. The city offers a wide variety of outdoor activities and top-notch sports facilities, including nine gymnasiums — among them two multifunctional sports venues, Fífan and Kórinn, each exceeding 10,000 square meters. There are also two swimming pools. Residents take pride in the town’s cultural institutions, such as the Kópavogur Natural History Museum, the Icelandic Music Museum, and the Kópavogur Youth Centre, all of which provide a rich array of social activities for both young and old.
