Hafnarfjörður is located on the southwest coast of Iceland, a port city situated approximately ten kilometers south of Reykjavík. It is the third most populous city in Iceland, after Reykjavík and Kópavogur. The city is known as one of the most popular dwelling places of elves in Iceland. Built atop lava and surrounded by massive rocks, people believe these to be the homes of elves. Visitors can travel around Hafnarfjörður to visit its most famous “elf homes.”

Hafnarfjörður hosts the annual Viking Festival, where enthusiasts from around the world recreate Viking attire, handicrafts, swordsmanship, and more. In addition, the city is now considered the rock 'n' roll capital of Iceland, with well-known Icelandic bands such as Jet Black Joe and HAM tracing their origins back to the city. Every May, the local Bright Days festival takes place, featuring short films and concerts, and the closing day usually honors Icelandic sailors.
